16th Century Farm Shop Conversion In Yorkshire

We see many conversions of agricultural buildings to commercial buildings across Yorkshire, planning and designing repurposed structures with smooth transitions that exceed expectations – like this listed barn conversion to a shop and restaurant in Leeds. Townscape Architects were commissioned to revitalise The Granary – a derelict 16th-century grade-II listed stone barn in Cookridge, West Yorkshire—an award-winning project, recognised as “Best Conversion” by Northern Design Awards.

Structural Glass Extension For Farm Shop Conversion

To complement the historic structure we added two contemporary structural glass extensions to the building, finished with zinc roofing and oak boarding. A new entrance, formed from steel and glass, now welcomes the approach to a double-height oak-framed restaurant and farm shop.

Timber Beam Restoration In Commercial Shop Design

The chatter of family and friends softly echoes under arching beams, each meticulously restored using traditional timber repair methods. During the day, the frame is accentuated by light streaming through high-level roof lights, drawing the eye upwards through the depths of oak and the sky beyond.

Sustainable Insulation For An Eco-Friendly Restaurant Barn Conversion

Modern interventions reiterate a sustainable approach; therefore, our design incorporated sheep wool insulation, under-floor heating, and wood-wool boarding.

LED lights were chosen for maximum energy efficiency when the purposely designed abundant natural light was low.

Restaurant Extension On a Listed Farm Building

This project had to combine new with old to convert a redundant farm building into a commercial use building. The design has to incorporate renovations and an extension to create a high-quality restaurant, farm shop, and cafe. The decayed oak structure was restored using traditional repair methods to preserve the fabulous structure for posterity. The tin roof was stripped from the building, the roof structure was replaced, and a traditional Yorkshire stone roof was reintroduced.

Open Plan Contemporary Design Barn Conversion To Restaurant

Internally, the barn is divided by curved glass walls and coloured glass panels, creating an open kitchen visible to diners and guests.

A free-flowing, open-plan commercial kitchen design exhibiting the skills of one of Yorkshire’s premier restaurants.
