As architects for swimming pool extensions across Yorkshire, we conceived this sun-filled natatorium for a heritage country home near Harrogate, remaining sensitive to its historic surroundings. Following our ethos of understand, solve, deliver, we integrated old with new to envisage a swimming pool design in North Yorkshire that explored harmonious space, materials, landscape and function.
Begin Your ProjectThe design brief was to transform a former outbuilding on a period coach house into a tranquil spa area. Using the building’s natural beauty, with stone walls and timber-framed sunroom features, the swimming pool space was designed to capture abundant sunlight and offer calming views of the stunning surrounding grounds—a tranquil space to blend with nature.
See GalleryThe former coach house presented design challenges due to its narrow yet elongated configuration. However, this obstacle enabled us to design a carbon-neutral, energy-efficient swimming pool. Alongside a longer swimming length, the south-facing roof offered the opportunity to incorporate solar panels for green energy, sustainable insulation technology, and further windows to maximise energy-saving through abundant sunlight.
Eco ArchitectureFrom the initial concept and feasibility study, the functionality of the pool area was carefully considered, including how it would be used and what would elevate the space. A glass-fronted sauna and open-plan shower area were ideal enhancements. Function combined with pool lighting, climate control, and the surrounding landscape formulated our design with the utmost detail and precision. Exploring the character-defining features of the existing estate led to the project’s success. A project that involved further significant refurbishment of the entire estate.
Related Case StudyWe worked with care for our client from design to obtaining planning approvals and, finally, project management of the sunroom pool construction. Our approach to conservation ensures that this new swimming pool honours the heritage of the area where it resides whilst enriching the lifestyle and enjoyment of the occupants—an elegant balance of past and present within a unified structure that appears to have always existed.
