Experience the beauty of Harlequin House, a new eco-home in York. With 280m2 of living space, this stunning house features 5 bedrooms, each with its own ensuite, a house bathroom, a lounge, a snug, and an open plan living kitchen. Every design aspect is focused on sustainability, with renewable eco-technology at the forefront.

This house was purposely designed with a ground floor area that is adaptable and accommodating for both families and retirees. The space was created to be adjustable to suit the owner’s changing requirements, whether it be a day spent at home with the grandkids, a special occasion, or a relaxing weekend alone. The project’s main priority was to create an eco home that could be enjoyed for years to come and serve as a comfortable space for the owners to age in place, complete with a bedroom and accessible bathroom on the ground floor if needed. Eco architectural design in York - The clients and our process

We first met with the clients, Martin & Christine, as they began their search for the perfect plot to build a contemporary, versatile, eco-friendly retirement home that operates on renewable energy. We proactively navigated Martin and Christine through the process with ease and simplicity, adjusting each element with the evolution of their home design.

We combine eco-technology with eco-architecture

Firstly, we worked together to understand appraisal options and provided viability reports and concept sketches. Then we solved the design development, bringing the concept alive with 3D visualisations and exploring eco-technologies while managing the planning processes. Finally, we delivered the technical design, assisted with the project tender for contractors, and managed the construction to completion.

A property designed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings in Dunnington

The building form and design are unique, located on an infill site on the outskirts of Dunnington, the site of a former bungalow sandwiched between residential and commercial uses. The new house design takes precedence from the local environment combining white render, cedar boarding and a metal standing seam roof. The end result embodies the true essence of contemporary architecture and design.

Super high-tech eco-friendly home design in York

Large sliding doors within the rear elevation maximise solar gain as well as create a seamless flow from the house to the garden.
Behind the scenes, the house is super high-tech and eco-friendly – it features 8kw of solar panels, Tesla storage batteries, home automation, air source heat pumps and low-energy lighting systems. The property has the capability to operate autonomously from the power grid by generating and stockpiling its own electricity – in theory, this would function off the grid!

Beyond architects, fully managed construction and contractor tenders in York

We were honoured to be part of Mike and Christine’s journey, overseeing the contractor tender and construction process. Together, we worked towards their vision by collaborating on home automation, kitchen and bathroom finishes, and bespoke joinery details. Alongside our ongoing project management with consistent inspections and design coordination, our network of trusted local contractors ensured that the project was completed to the highest standard. It was a pleasure to witness the transformation of their space and bring their dream to reality.
